Belief and Superstition

Take a walk in the magic forrest – if you dare!

In the Medieval Centre´s forrest, you may meet the Creature of the brook, The Hell-Horse, the Lamb of Death and the Grave Sow – well, all of the supernatural beings of medieval Denmark.

Sundkøbing is the town of the Medieval Centre, a thriving market town with merchants and hardworking craftsmen. But in earlier days, there was also a village where the Sundkøbing Forrest now stands. The village was haunted by ghosts, trolls, and all kinds of supernatural beings, and eventually the villagers gave up and moved to more peaceful surroundings. But the dark creatures stayed on! Take a walk in the forrest, and see who – or what – you´ll meet there!

The Stick Hog – in this spot, a townswoman once found a murdered man, a stranger that nobody knew, who lay there with a knife in his chest. Costum dictates that here, you should place a stick, so that his ghost won´t follow you, or enter the town.

The healing Tree – crawl through the tree, and be healed. The tree will take over all you ailings. But don´t foget to say the Ave Maria-prayer, or it won´t work; Hail Mary, Mother of God, blessed be thou among women, and blessed be the fruit of thy loins, Jesus Christ.

The Old Gallows – More than ten criminals were hanged here, and afterwards buried in the unconsecrated earth of the gallow hill. They haunt the hill, remember to make the sign of the cross here, or the ghosts will follow you! And take care, do not touch the bones of the the dead thieves that lie scattered on the hill – or the ghosts will follow you to your home.

The Three Church Stones – This is the site of the parish church. In this spot, the villagers tried to build a church for the village, but a troll lived nearby, who was so angered by having to listen to the noise of the church bells, that he tore down what the villagers build every night. The stones were meant to be the foundations of the church, but it was never finished. In the end, the villagers gave up and left the village – but the troll is probably still here.

Jump from one stone to the other. Then, the troll knows that you are not going to build the church again, and will leave you in peace.

The House of the Lepers – If you caught this disease – leprecy – you were considered dead to all other people. A Death Mass would be celebrated in church, and you would be removed from your family, to live with the other lepers. Never again would you see your family. Lepers were not allowed inside the town, and if they met other people, in the woods, for instance, you were ordered to use a rattle to warn the healthy people. They are all dead now, but their ghosts still roam the woods. Use the rattle to keep them away.

The Hell Horse – The Hell Horse is a three-legged ghostly horse. When it appears to people, it signifies that they will soon die. The Hell Horse has been seen by several people in this very spot, and therefor the townspeople raised the horse´s skull to scare it away.

The Creature of the Brook – Each spring, when the brook is full of water and the children of the town come here to play, the Creature of the Brook tries to catch them. He will promise to carry them dry-shoed across the brook, but instead he will pull them under the water and drown them. Do not under any circumstances throw stones in the water, it may awaken the creature. Sometimes, elves are also seen by the brook – do not follow them if they call out to you – you will never come back!

The Werewolf – Here hangs the hide of the last werewolf on the island of Falster! A werewolf is a man, who can change shape into a wolf – not just by full moon, but whenever he likes. But he can only change back, when he finds his clothes again!

If a pregnant woman crawls naked through a horse hide, she will avoid labour pains, but the child will become a werewolf. It is easy to see, if a man is a werewolf; his eyebrows will be one big lump of fur, and he will have a furry spot between his shoulderblades – and he cannot touch silver. Look around... do you have a werewolf in your family?

The Holy Source – This source is concecrated to Saint Gertrud, and the water has the powers to keep mice and rats away from your house. The water must be taken from the source on Saint Gertrud´s Day, March 17th, and straight away poured into the mouse- and ratholes. The vermin will then disappear immediately. The sourc e is only active for a short perod in spring each year.

You may also stick a piece of paper with Saint Gertrud´s name written on it into the vermin holes, but the sourse water is more efficient.

See also the Saint Clement Source on the slope next to the boat houses by the harbour; the water from this source will heal ailments, especially nausea.

The Lamb of Death – Take a close look at the sheep that roam the forrest. If one of the lamb has only three legs, it may be the Lamb of Death. It may also have a strange redish colour instead, as if soaked in blood. If you see it, it will not be a good omen, for the lamb prophesies of imminent death – however, this is only so, if the lamb comes up to you. Do not follow the sheep.

The Subterranians – also knows as the mound-dwellers, and sometimes pixies. They guard gravemounds, and you should not disturb them, of dig in their mounds; then, they will revenge themselves upon you, and burn your house down!

To be on the safe side, you may leave a small present for them outside the mound; a little food, or other useful things – but never things made from iron! The subterraneans hate iron, and gets very upset if they find iron things outside their home! Take good care not to disturb them.

The Grave Sow – The gRave Sow is a huge pig with a knife-sharp back. It guards hidden treasures.

A young man from Sundkøbing once dug in this hill, and the subterraneans promised him that he could keep the treasure, provided he could remove it all before dawn. If he didn´t make it, the grave sow would come, run between his legs, and cut him in two with it´s sharp back.

The young man dug with all his might, but when the first rays of sun reached the hill, he still missed a few coins. The grave sow appeared, and he desperately tried to get out of the hole. However, the Grave sow got hold of his leg, and for the rest of his days, he had a severe limb. All the gold fell back into the hole, and since then, noone has dared to touch it. If you try, and if you find any gold, you may only take one coin – or the grave sow will come after you, too!

ronnebr048a

The Rowan Tree – Rowan has since the dawn of time been considered a holy and magical tree, that protects against evil magic and demonic powers. Rowan also has the ability to cure diseases. It is considered holy, because the cross that carried Christ was made from rowan.

If you break a small twig off a rowan tree and bring it with you, neigther the Creature of the Brook, the Hell Horse, the Grave Sow, the Werewolf, or any of the other diabolical creatures can harm you. Remember that, next time you enter this wood!
