From Sheep to Fabric

An old Danish saying claims that adversity teaches even a naked woman to spin... but there are certainly better ways to learn! This week, we focus entirely on all aspects of indispensable clothing production; everyone - rich and poor alike - needs clothes on their bodies, but in the Middle Ages, one didn't just buy ready-made clothes in a store. Behind even the simplest piece of clothing lay a long and meticulous process.

When the experienced Finnish medieval group Merry Swan visits the Medieval Center again this year, guests are given a rare opportunity to follow the entire process behind clothing and textile production in the Middle Ages up close, from spinning and weaving to dyeing, cutting, and sewing.
