Summer at the Medieval Center
29 June – 2 August 2026
Summer at the Medieval Center offers plenty of experiences for the whole family. Every day you can enjoy knightly tournaments, firing demonstrations with our large trebuchets, living crafts, historic houses, military training, and encounters with the people of the medieval market town of Sundkøbing.
Throughout the summer, we also present special themes and experimental projects that change from week to week. Get a closer look at our work with experimental archaeology, try your hand at medieval crafts, and meet visiting historical groups from across Europe.
There are always new people, new stories, and new experiences waiting to be discovered at the Medieval Center. Activities vary from day to day – follow today’s program in our calendar here. Scroll down to read more about different activities.

Painters, pigments and frescos (29 June - 3 July)
During the first week of the summer holidays, Sundkøbing becomes the setting for the experimental archaeology project Saint Luke's Workshop.
Together with invited schoolchildren, the Medieval Center's educators investigate how medieval painters produced their colours. Using local soils and minerals, they attempt to recreate pigments and paints using methods known from the Middle Ages.
Visitors can follow the work in the workshop, observe the process up close, and learn more about medieval painting techniques and the experiments being carried out.

Get Rich at the Medieval Center (6 - 12 July)
This week is all about trade, money, and good fortune.
Wealthy merchants visit Sundkøbing, and through games, challenges, and activities, you can try your hand at medieval commerce. Who knows – you might end up with pockets full of jingling coins!
Throughout the week, we also explore games, entertainment, and leisure activities in the Middle Ages, with activities for both children and adults.

Medieval Wellness: Building the Bathhouse (13 - 26 July)
During these weeks, all of Sundkøbing is occupied by a major experiment: the town's first public bathhouse is being established.
Bathhouses were among the most important social spaces of the Middle Ages, yet many questions remain about how they functioned in practice. We are therefore attempting to transform an existing house into a working bathhouse while investigating everything from construction and heating to steam, scents, and bathing culture.
Follow the project, meet the bathmaster, and see whether we succeed in recreating the medieval world's favourite wellness experience.

Life as a Mercenary (27 July - 2 August)
What was life like for a professional warrior in the Middle Ages?
In Week 31, the warrior group Milites et Nobilis takes over Sundkøbing. The group recreates medieval military life with weapons, armour, camp life, and combat techniques.
Watch demonstrations, learn about medieval warfare, and take part in activities where both children and adults can test their abilities as commanders and soldiers.
