A banquet with the wealthy Hanseatic merchants

Friday 22 May, 17:30 - 21:30

Towards the end of the Middle Ages, merchants from the Hanseatic cities became incredibly wealthy. And they largely continued to do so by trading in food. Beer, herring, salt, grain and exotic spices, which the Hanseatic merchants transported over great distances, changed European cuisine forever. And a true Hanseatic merchant would invite his friends to sample sumptuous delicacies. On this evening, the wealthy Hanseatic merchant visits the Medieval Centre’s recreated medieval town of Sundkøbing, and he has brought with him the finest food and the best German beer that the medieval markets can muster – and you are invited.

On Friday 22 May, the Medieval Centre and Madens Folkemøde are jointly hosting a food history evening in the footsteps of the Hanseatic League. There will be a lecture on food history, historical beers, and a grand banquet, where the Hanseatic merchant will serve the finest produce his many ships have been able to bring to the town.

Price per person: 569 DKK + fees

The price includes:

  • Sumptuous Hanseatic medieval banquet (4 courses + snacks)

  • Historical beer menu

  • Lecture on the history of food

  • Medieval entertainment

  • Weekly ticket to the Medieval Centre

Note: The event will be held in Danish. We are currently unable to cater for any allergies, and vegetarian alternatives are not generally available. However, you are always welcome to call the Medieval Centre to enquire whether specific requirements can be met.
