Medieval Gastronomy - a cooking course
Friday 22 May, 10:00–15:00
Medieval food is both significantly different from today’s cuisine and, at the same time, the seed from which our modern cuisine has grown. The boundaries between sweet and savoury were far more fluid, and ingredients such as potatoes and tomatoes were not yet known in Europe. But it was also the era when the spice blends we know today were born, when modern baking and culinary crafts were refined, and when food exports became ‘big business’.
On this cooking course, you can try your hand at medieval culinary arts, learn healthy and festive medieval dishes that you can make at home, and taste your way through a unique era in our cultural history.
Polona Janezic from Slovenia is a highly renowned food historian. For many years, she has travelled extensively throughout Europe, delving into the culinary arts of all eras through research, communication and practice. Together with the Medieval Centre’s skilled presenters, Polona will give you an unforgettable culinary experience.
